Writing Checklist:   Which best represents your child’s writing habits?

Take this short Weekly Writer Club survey to find out if your kids are writing enough.

I write often.   It’s a creative part of school.  I like improving with practice.

Kids are writing at least 15 minutes, four times a week in a wide variety of ways: journals, blogs, stories, reports, and letters.  Not all their writing is edited or graded. They know how to inform, explain, narrate, or persuade in writing without hesitation. They think independently and confidently synthesize their own ideas rather than plagiarizing.

I only write if required.  Even then, I try to finish fast.  It’s a chore.

Kids are writing with less frequency or variety.  They tend to complete assignments but still struggle with independent thinking.  When they get stuck, their frustration level grows.  They tend to turn in their first draft.  They see the grade on a paper as more important than content. Their writing does not usually reflect their unique interests or curiosity.

I write as little as possible.   On my own, I get frustrated.

Kids procrastinate writing assignments. It is a chore so they are as brief as possible.  It’s hard to get them to expand their writing because they “don’t know what else to say”.  Their reading tends to be limited or confined to one genre.  They tend to plagiarize ideas and phrases, because they have little confidence in their own ability to communicate well.

I avoid writing and consider myself to be a bad writer.

Kids write but expect to fail.  They tend to look upon grades as a reflection of their worth. Over time, the lack of practice compounds and the gap widens until they are not performing at grade level.  They tend to need frequent supervision to get the work done. They’ll often carry the label of “bad writer” all the way through adulthood.

Weekly Writer Club:  Program Highlights

Here is what you receive immediately with your family membership during the school year:

All children in Grades 2-8 can get started writing immediately by customizing their own Profile Pages with fun photos and hobbies.

“You’ll begin with daily free writing in The Blogs and read other blog posts written by Club Members from around the world. Adding Blog Tags help match you with other kids who have your same interests! You’ll be able to send Club Messages to anyone in the Club, including the Director and your parents.  Copies of messages come to your home Inbox to alert you that “You’ve Got Mail!”

You’ll receive leadership promotions for writing real Keepsake Letters to experts, celebrities, friends, and family.  You’ll begin in the WWClub as a National Correspondent and receive your own business cards with the first letter you write to the Club Office.  Your second rank will be Club Ambassador and the top rank is student Board of Directors.  All ages and abilities can rise to the top ranks simply by the numbers of letters that you write and receive.

Weekly Writer Club Language Arts activities have triple value: plenty of writing practice, activities that match content learning objectives, and rewarding peer leadership.

You’ll participate in Discussion Forums,  Wikis, and Web 2.0 technology inside a safe password-protected Moodle platform. In fact you will practice HTML “WYSIWYG” editing tools each time you write online.

All WWClub projects and activities are based on your interests and hobbies. You choose your activity and what you’d like to accomplish.  You can design and invent new projects, games, assignments, and challenges in “courses” based on your interests and requests. Match your Weekly Writer Club activities with your own homeschool curriculum plans.

You can also use the WWClub for writing required in any other Language Arts curriculum or in other subjects like history and science. The WWClub can be a one-stop-shop for all your writing.  The more you write and get involved in the WWClub, the more fun you’ll have!
